Sergio España
About
Sergio España obtained a PhD in Computer Science in 2011 from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). Since 2015, he has been working as a tenured Assistant Professor at Utrecht University (UU), where he leads the research line on Software for Organisational Responsibility. His work focuses on helping organisations enhance their sustainability through methods and ICT, while contributing new knowledge to the scientific community. Teaching track. He has taught over 40 editions of 13 different BSc and MSc courses across several countries, including Spain, the Netherlands, Chile, Paraguay, and Colombia. He has also delivered industry-oriented workshops, taking an active role in the (re)design and coordination of many of these courses. His teaching excellence has been recognised with 7 teaching awards. He served as the Coordinator of the UU Master in Business Informatics for three years and was a member of the UU Master Education and Advisory Committee for two years. He has directly supervised 4 PhD theses, 30 MSc theses, and 35 BSc theses, in addition to acting as second supervisor for a similar number. Regular student and peer surveys at UU reflect that he is regarded as a highly effective teacher and a supportive supervisor. All of his PhD graduates have gone on to secure positions in academia or governmental institutions. Research track. He has participated in various regional, national, and international research projects, such as ITEA2 UsiXML, FP7 CaaS, and NWO Scentiss, serving as principal investigator in several of them. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers in conferences (e.g., RE, ER, CAiSE, RCIS, ICT4S) and journals (e.g., Software Quality Journal, Information Systems, SOSYM, BISE, Information and Software Technology). This number increases further when including technical reports, book chapters, and editorials. His work has received five best paper awards (PoEM, COPERMAN, ICT4S, and ECIS twice). His current research is multidisciplinary, spanning Information, Computing, Economics, Management, and Sustainability Sciences. He is currently investigating methods for measuring organisational sustainability impact and is developing a theory on how human values are instantiated in software artefacts, influencing both software development processes and user behaviour. Scientific community service. He has served as a Programme Committee member for 68 international conferences and workshops, and as PC chair for 14 of them. Additionally, he has taken on roles as organisation chair or member (8 times) and held other chair positions (7 times). He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Computer Science and Information Management Quarterly (CSIMQ) journal and has served on the UU Science-Geoscience Ethics Review Board since 2018. Valorisation and knowledge transfer. He has a strong track record in engineering methods and software that are transferred to organisations. He co-authored Communication Analysis, a model-based requirements engineering method currently in use by Anecoop S Coop, Spain’s largest second-tier agricultural cooperative. He also integrated Communication Analysis with the OO-Method and co-developed the GREAT Process Modeller, transferring knowledge to Integranova and Tecnogram Procesos through national and industry-funded R&D projects and contracts. He is a member of the International Requirements Engineering Board, contributing to the definition of syllabi and certifications in the domain. He also serves as the software product manager of Show your Heart, a web-based impact measurement tool used by over 1000 organisations. This tool was developed through an international open-source project in partnership with universities, governmental institutions, networks of social enterprises, and software development companies. Activism and societal contributions. He is an active advocate in the fields of ICT for organisational sustainability and the social and solidarity economy, fostering connections between academic research and societal impact. He is a member of the ICT for Sustainability scientific community and sits on the Advisory Board of the Refugee Wellbeing and Integration Initiative foundation. He is also an individual member of the Spanish Network of Networks of Alternative and Solidarity Economy (REAS), a member of the Advisory Committee on Social Balance of the Catalan Network of Solidarity Economy (XES), a member of the Dutch working group of the Economy for the Common Good, and an occasional collaborator with other networks of social enterprises. His overarching goal is to ensure that his research generates meaningful and positive societal impact.
